FONTANA DELLE BRECCE: a peaceful plateau
In the heart of the Lucanian mountains lies a unique place: the Fontana delle Brecce Refuge, a landmark for hikers, families, curious visitors and nature lovers since 2023.
It is the first and only CAI refuge in Basilicata, welcoming and immersed in an extraordinary natural setting. The structure, owned by the Municipality of Marsico Nuovo, is managed by the CAI Section of Potenza, which has dedicated itself to its renovation.
The refuge is located on a large grassy plateau, ideal for camping in tents and supplied with fresh water sources. From Fontana delle Brecce, at an altitude of 1,300 metres, there is an extensive network of trails marked by the CAI, with new routes currently being catalogued and marked.
Trekking enthusiasts can easily reach destinations such as Monte Maruggio, Piana del Lago, Serra di Calvello, Monte Lama, Monte Calvelluzzo and Monte Volturino. To the west, the trail leads to Colle Margiotto and then to the village of Sasso di Castalda; to the south-west, on the other hand, you can reach Pietra Maura, which awaits those who want to try their hand at climbing.
The refuge is surrounded by majestic turkey oaks and, above all, centuries-old beech trees: among these, the famous 'Faggio delle dieci braccia' (Ten-Arm Beech) stands out, so imposing that it takes five people to encircle its trunk.
In the nearby villages of Marsico Nuovo, Sasso di Castalda, Abriola and Calvello, you can enjoy the authentic flavours of Lucania in typical trattorias and farmhouses.
The refuge, available upon reservation, offers its guests:
- 20 beds in cosy rooms heated in winter
- A kitchen equipped for preparing meals independently
- 4 modern and functional bathrooms
- Spacious common areas dedicated to conviviality and sharing
Reservations are open to everyone: hikers, families, groups of friends, schools and anyone who wants to enjoy an immersive experience, far from the hustle and bustle of the city.
