The Parco Nazionale dell’Appennino Lucano Val d’Agri Lagonegrese covers 69,000 hectares in Basilicata: a protected area established in 2017 that preserves and enhances a biodiversity heritage considered among the richest and most varied in Italy.

A natural bridge between the Pollino and Cilento parks, it is characterised by a vast environmental heterogeneity ranging from 300 to 2,000 metres in altitude, a multifaceted landscape marked by mountains, hills, authentic villages, lakes and river valleys, which preserves the memory of ancient peoples, the force of nature and the creativity and industriousness of generations. The twenty-nine municipalities of the park form a mosaic of places and identities, where history intertwines with spectacular environments — from the peaks of Monte Papa to the spires of the Murge di Sant'Oronzio, from karst caves to centuries-old beech forests.

Here, water, rock and forests give life to scenes of powerful beauty, where human presence has left indelible marks: from the civilisations of the Oenotrians and Lucanians to the splendour of Roman Grumentum, to medieval villages and the traditions of sheep farming and transhumance. The Appennino Lucano Park is home to numerous Special Protection Areas (ZPS) and Special Areas of Conservation (ZSC), essential for the protection of biodiversity and rare species, included in the Natura 2000 Network. Here, nature still expresses itself in all its richness, offering refuge to precious flora and fauna and evocative landscapes that tell the story and beauty of the Southern Apennines.

Special Protection Areas (ZPS) are natural areas protected by the European Union under the provisions of the Birds Directive 2009/147/EC. These areas were created to protect wild birds, nesting sites and migratory routes. Included in the Natura 2000 network, ZPS are essential for the conservation of biodiversity and endangered species, preventing any activities that could damage their balance:

Special Areas of Conservation (ZSC) are protected areas recognised at European level and established under the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC. Their purpose is to ensure the long-term conservation of natural habitats and endangered species of flora and fauna. ZSCs are also part of the Natura 2000 network and represent the next step after Sites of Community Importance (ZSCs), for which specific management strategies have been drawn up:
