Lake Plain

Between open horizons and mountain air

In the heart of the Lucanian Apennines National Park, in the Marsico Nuovo area, the Piana del Lago stretches out like a wide high-altitude plateau at about 1,300 metres, dominated by a picturesque spring-fed lake. Fed by rich water sources, this natural mirror gives rise to the Agri River and is one of the most representative environments of the protected area.

Here lies the naturalistic complex of Fontana delle Brecce-Piana del Lago (Fountain of Brecce-Piana del Lago), a large unspoilt natural park crossed by beech and turkey oak woods, widespread springs and seasonal streams that shape the landscape on the slopes of Monte Lama, one of the most interesting naturalistic and environmental points in the area.

The setting is one of unspoilt, silent nature, where beech woods alternate with the shiny green of holly and, in spring, the undergrowth is covered with the fragrant blooms of wild garlic. The presence of horses grazing freely helps to reinforce the atmosphere of balance and harmony with the environment.

The Piana del Lago is an ideal destination at any time of year: an easy circular route runs alongside the lake and is perfect for walking, Nordic walking and, in winter, cross-country skiing. From its edges, paths lead up to nearby peaks, such as the Serra di Calvello, offering sweeping views of the Agri valley.

It is a place that invites you to stop, have a picnic in the open air and get in touch with the true nature of Basilicata.
