Outdoor Experience
Nature and Adventure
The Lucanian Apennines National Park Val d'Agri Lagonegrese is a natural open-air gym, an area where adventure intertwines with the landscape and every outdoor activity becomes an authentic way to experience the Lucanian mountains. Here, nature is not just the backdrop, but the real protagonist of experiences that range from pure adrenaline to the slow and conscious discovery of places.
Among the most thrilling experiences are the large suspension bridges. Castelsaraceno is home to one of the longest Tibetan bridges in Europe, a 586-metre structure suspended 80 metres above the ground, which connects the Lucanian Apennines Val d'Agri Lagonegrese National Park to the Pollino National Park, offering a suspended crossing between woods and rocky walls.
In Sasso di Castalda, in the heart of the park, the Ponte alla Luna (Moon Bridge) has become the symbol of a new way of experiencing the mountains: a long walkway suspended over a hundred metres above the Fosso Arenazzo canyon, part of an intricate system of paths, via ferrata and crossings that starts in the historic centre and leads into the monumental beech forest of Costara. Here you literally walk between heaven and earth, in an experience that combines modern engineering, local history and strong emotions. The Ponte alla Luna is dedicated to Rocco Petrone, a NASA engineer of Sasso di Castalda origin and a key figure in the Apollo 11 mission.

The Lucanian Apennines are also a land of hiking for those who want to go trekking or hiking. A dense network of trails criss-crosses beech forests, panoramic ridges and river valleys, offering itineraries for all levels of fitness, as well as excursions to the Viggiano massif, Monte Volturino or along the ridges of Schiena d'Asino, allowing you to immerse yourself in environments of great natural and geological value, often accompanied by official park guides.

The park area is also ideal for equestrian tourism, which is much more than just an outdoor activity: it is a slow and authentic way to get in tune with the territory. On horseback, you can ride through woods, valleys and villages far from the noise of the world, rediscovering the pleasure of time passing at the animal's pace. The trails, suitable for both beginners and experienced riders, lead through unspoilt landscapes and places rich in history, with stops at well-equipped and welcoming facilities. Among these, a picturesque circular route of about 86 km connects Laurenzana to Abriola, offering an immersive experience of nature, traditions and wellbeing in the name of slow tourism.

The woods and forests of the Park are also a natural invitation to slow down. Here, forest bathing becomes a profound experience of wellbeing: accompanied by certified guides, you can immerse yourself in greenery following the practices of shinrin-yoku, an ancient Japanese discipline. You walk slowly, listen to the silence, breathe in the scent of resin and moss, and rediscover direct contact with the earth. Even a few hours in the woods help to relieve stress and tension, improving breathing, heart rate and mood. An outdoor activity that regenerates mind and body, reconnecting man with nature at its most authentic.

In winter, the same mountains covered in woods are transformed into ideal settings for snowshoeing and snow hiking, such as in the Pierfaone and Monte Arioso massifs, between Abriola and Sasso di Castalda.

In fact, when the snow arrives, the Lucanian Apennine Park changes its appearance but does not slow down. The Sellata-Arioso-Pierfaone ski area, a few kilometres from Potenza, offers a range of winter experiences ranging from downhill skiing to snowshoeing, bobsleighing, snow tubing and sledging. The Fosso Neviera ski lift offers downhill ski slopes surrounded by woods, ski schools for children, magic carpets for beginners and views stretching as far as the peaks of the Apennines. On Monte Sirino, between Lagonegro and Lauria, chairlifts and ski lifts serve slopes suitable for everyone, with particular attention to beginners and families. It is an accessible and authentic mountain complex, where sport and silence coexist at an altitude of between 1,350 and 1,737 metres.

There is also climbing, which can be practised both outdoors - on the cliffs of Volturino (Masso dei Gallesi) or the cliffs of Satriano di Lucania or Viggiano, which offer many climbing routes - and indoors at the 'Bosco dei Cigni' Environmental Education Centre in Grumento Nova, also a reference point for orienteering activities, nature workshops and outdoor educational trails. Here, as in other CEAS centres in the park, visitors can experience forms of active tourism that combine sport, knowledge and respect for the environment.

Direct contact with nature also includes birdwatching along the Pertusillo and Pantano lakes and the Agri river, or at the Wild Lucania Nature Reserve near the Murgia di Sant'Oronzo, where you can observe herons, storks, birds of prey and rare species, or through themed treks to discover medicinal herbs in the Upper Agri Valley, which often end with small experiential workshops.

The outdoor dimension is also enriched by cultural experiences: guided tours of the Grumentum Archaeological Park and Museum, where the monumental remains of the ancient Roman city interact with the surrounding landscape, or the Sanctuary of Serra Lustrante in Armento, or the Villa dei Bruttii Praesentes in Barricelle di Marsicovetere, a monumental complex that recounts centuries of history, agricultural work, power and imperial life, or evenings dedicated to observing the sky in planetariums and educational spaces, such as the Astronomical Observatory of Anzi, to rediscover the charm of the sky far from light pollution.

In the Lucanian Apennines National Park, every outdoor activity becomes a complete journey, combining movement, emotion and knowledge. Whether crossing a suspension bridge, sliding on the snow, cycling through the woods or walking slowly along an ancient path, the experience is always the same: feeling part of a living, complex and surprising territory, capable of offering adventure and authenticity in every season.
