Caracciolo Castle
Between stone, history and legend
Perched on the rock overlooking Brienza, Caracciolo Castle is the ancient and symbolic heart of the village, an imposing presence that tells centuries of history, power and mystery. Its origins date back to the early Middle Ages: as early as the Lombard period, between the 8th and 9th centuries, there was an early defensive system here, testifying to the site's early strategic importance. A document from 1237, issued by Frederick II of Swabia, officially attests to its existence, but the manor had already been a protagonist in the life of the territory for some time.
Over the centuries, the castle changed its appearance and owners: from the Angevins to the De Porcellis family, and finally to the powerful Caracciolo family of Naples, who would profoundly mark its history. With the Caracciolos, the castle took on a dual function: noble residence and defensive stronghold. In 1561, at the behest of Marcantonio Caracciolo, the keep was transformed into a prison, while the rest of the complex retained its stately character. The family retained control of the fiefdom until the second half of the 19th century, before selling the property, which underwent a slow decline in the 20th century, exacerbated by earthquakes in the 1950s and 1980s.
The current appearance of Caracciolo Castle is the result of restoration work carried out after the 1980 earthquake, which restored the surviving structures to their former glory and rekindled interest in one of the most evocative fortified complexes in Basilicata. According to tradition, the castle had 365 rooms, a self-sufficient microcosm with reception rooms, chapels, theatres, kitchens, armouries and service areas, protected by a dense network of houses built close together, a typical medieval defensive strategy.
What makes Brienza Castle even more fascinating is the legend of Princess Bianca. It is said that in the 14th century, a noblewoman who loved luxury and splendour lived within these walls, keeping a fabulous treasure in a secret room, the mysterious room number 366, known only to her and her maid. Jewels, gold and priceless riches which, according to the myth, are still waiting to be found, fuelling the castle's enigmatic aura.
Caracciolo Castle is set in an urban context of extraordinary charm: ancient Brienza, with its medieval churches, stone alleys and architectural layers that tell the story of the passage of the Lombards, Normans and Angevins. Today, the village, which was awarded the title of City in 2005, is considered one of the most evocative in Lucania.
In recent years, a major restoration and enhancement project has been launched, aiming to transform the castle and the historic centre into a large monumental and cultural park, giving the community and visitors a place where history, landscape and memory come together once again.
Between historical re-enactments, excavations and restorations, Caracciolo Castle continues to watch over Brienza, the silent guardian of a past that never ceases to fascinate.
