The Sanctuary of Maria Santissima del Monte Saraceno
Perched on top of a rocky spur at an altitude of 1,320 metres, on the slopes of Monte Volturino, the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima del Monte Saraceno dominates with solemn beauty the entire valley that stretches from Monte di Viggiano to Caperrino, among dense woods, bright clearings and the slow flow of the Piesco river. Here, in the green heart of the Lucanian Apennines Val d'Agri Lagonegrese National Park, stands one of the most iconic and spiritually significant places in Basilicata, a profound symbol of faith and collective memory in Calvello.
The origins of the sanctuary date back to the Middle Ages: according to tradition, it was founded around 1150 by Benedictine monks, near a cave where a hermit is said to have lived, in an area that once housed a military post, first Lombard and then Saracen. The very name of the mountain preserves the charm of this ancient and mysterious history. The current architectural structure dates back to the 15th century, while over time the sanctuary has undergone renovations that have preserved its simplicity, resulting in a stone façade that blends perfectly into the surrounding landscape. The profound silence, interrupted only by birdsong and the wind in the chestnut trees, accompanies visitors on an experience that is both spiritual and naturalistic.
The sanctuary is about eight kilometres from the town of Calvello and can be reached via a steep road that climbs up the side of the mountain. Tradition has it that, before crossing the threshold, the faithful must walk around the perimeter of the chapel three times, singing ancient Benedictine chants: a simple yet powerful ritual that has remained unchanged over the centuries. Inside is the effigy of the Madonna del Monte Saraceno, protector of Calvello together with St. Nicholas, preserved in a precious wooden urn called a 'caggia', made by local master craftsmen.
The cult of the Madonna del Monte is the most deeply felt intangible cultural heritage of the Calvello community, handed down from generation to generation with ancient fervour. The high point of this devotion is renewed every year with the great processions that mark the religious calendar of the town. On the second Sunday in May, the statue is carried on the shoulders of the faithful from the Mother Church to the sanctuary, covering over 14 kilometres along forest paths and stretches of road, in a long and tiring climb that becomes an act of collective faith. On 8 and 9 September, the statue returns to the village: first down the mountain, then in a procession through all the districts of Calvello, symbolically uniting the entire community under the gaze of its Heavenly Mother.
The Madonna is carried by a group of over one hundred bearers, many of whom return from abroad especially to experience the honour and joy of this ancient tradition. They are surrounded by a human chain of worshippers, amid folk songs, prayers, tears and emotionally charged silence. The Madonna del Monte Saraceno is not only a religious festival, but also a cultural event of extraordinary intensity, combining history, folklore, music, rituality and a sense of belonging. The Marian songs, some of which were composed by local priests, still resonate today with verses that express a deep and shared faith.
The sanctuary and its cult have gone through centuries of history, overcoming interruptions and transformations, as documented by anthropological studies. The coronation of the statue on 9 September 1947 remains unforgettable, when thousands of pilgrims flocked from all over the region to witness an event that marked the history of the sanctuary forever. The crowns of the Virgin and Child were made with gold donated by the families of Calvello and devotees from neighbouring villages, in a collective gesture of faith and gratitude.
Legends, folk tales and memories handed down by the elderly, guardians of an intangible heritage made up of gestures, words and silences, flourish around the Madonna del Monte Saraceno. After the religious rites, especially in May, the festival takes on a more convivial dimension: the plain at the foot of the mountain comes alive with colours, scents and flavours, with roasted meats, encounters and moments of sharing that strengthen the bond between the sacred and the community.
