Terre dell’Alta Val d’Agri DOC wine
The history of wine in Basilicata has its roots in ancient Enotria, the 'land of vines', where grapes were already being grown and wine produced in the valleys and hills of the southern Apennines in the second millennium BC. When the Greeks landed on the coasts of southern Italy in the 8th century BC, they found a wine-making tradition that was already alive and well-established. In the inland areas of Lucania, including the Alta Val d'Agri, vine cultivation continued to flourish over the centuries, enriched by prized varieties and advanced techniques. In Roman times, these territories were considered centres of excellence, capable of producing wines that were appreciated and traded, a vocation that time has never erased.
It is in this millennial tradition that Terre dell'Alta Val d'Agri DOC (Controlled Designation of Origin) was born, recognised by Ministerial Decree on 4 September 2003, produced in the municipalities of Viggiano, Grumento Nova and Moliterno up to an altitude of 800 metres. Here, the mountain microclimate, with significant summer temperature variations, and the rich, well-drained soils create the ideal conditions for high-quality grapes, capable of expressing character and elegance. The types specified in the regulations are Rosso, Rosso Riserva and Rosato, all of which have a significant base of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, international grape varieties that take on a surprisingly territorial identity in this valley.
The Rosso, which requires at least one year of ageing plus three months of bottle ageing, is structured and harmonious, perfect as a table wine; Rosso Riserva, aged for at least twenty-four months, six of which in wood, offers greater complexity, aromatic depth and spicy notes; Rosato, enhanced by Malvasia Bianca di Basilicata, captivates with its bright colour and fresh, delicate taste, and is released for consumption in the spring following the harvest.
Terre dell'Alta Val d'Agri DOC is now the oenological symbol of a valley that has been able to transform its history into a glass capable of recounting, sip after sip, the authentic soul of Lucania.
