The Sanctuary of Santa Maria dei Termini

Five kilometres from the village of Spinoso is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dei Termini. The chapel, restored and returned to worship in 2023, stands on the border between the territories of Spinoso and Sarconi, hence the name “Termini”.

Its origins are probably linked to the ancient route of the Via Herculia, an important Roman road that connected Sannio to Lucania. The building, which is very simple and charming, has a stone façade and a bell gable; the interior, consisting of a single room, housed a precious wooden statue of the Madonna and Child, venerated since the 14th century, which can be admired in the Mother Church of Santa Maria Assunta.

The Virgin is depicted seated on a throne, with the Child on her lap, both holding a globe, a symbol of protection and universality.

The sanctuary is at the centre of a heartfelt popular devotion that is renewed every year with two solemn processions.
